HERE YOU CAN FIND SOME INFORMATION ABOUT ACCOMMODATION ON SAARLAND UNIVERSITY (GERMANY).

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

The university itself does not offer any accommodation. However, there is a cooperation with many dormitories, including the dormitories offered by the "Studentenwerk", the German National Association for Student Affairs. Only a small percentage of students in Saarbrücken live in dormitories, the majority of students lives in private housing all over the city.

Most dormitories offer single rooms in small shared apartments (2-3 persons) or single apartments. On the private market, the most common form of living is in shared housing as well.

Housing is generally located off campus, only a very small dormitory is located on campus, preferably rented to students with disabilities.

Without board, students should expect 300 to 350€ for a room in a shared accommodation and 350 - 500€ for single apartments

2. REGULATIONS - DOCUMENTS

All contracts are signed directly between students and landlords. It is standardized German rental contracts, either for a fix period (usually 1 or 2 semesters) or contracts with an unlimited duration that the students can cancel by giving 3-month notice.

Most landlords require a passport, as well as a payment of a security deposit and the first month`s rent, to sign a rental agreement. It is furthermore often asked that students show some kind of financial stability, for example by providing a scholarship confirmation, a job, a letter from the parents or a blocked account (for non-EU students).

3. APPLICATION PROCESS

Dormitories offer contracts of no shorter than one semester (i.e. 6 months). On the private market, different durations can be agreed with the landlord.

Deadlines are all specific for each accommodation and differ depending on the different landlords. There is an average waiting period of 6 months for many dormitories.

5. CITY / UNIVERSITY AREA INFO

There are dormitories as well as private housing offered all over the city. Saarbrücken is a medium sized city, so any part of the city is suitable to reach the campus in not more than 30 minutes.

Most students look for accommodation in the areas "Dudweiler", "St. Johann", "Alt-Saarbrücken", "Eschberg" or "Am Homburg", as these are the closest areas to the campus.

All parts of Saarbrücken are connected by bus to the campus and the transport does usually not exceed 30 minutes.

Public transport is included in the student card that students get when enrolling at Saarland University, so there are no additional costs for transport.

As the accommodation is not given by the university, we cannot share any documents on this. By experience the dormitories and landlords have implemented extensive hygiene protocols, including mandatory mask wearing in the buildings and availabilities of disinfectants.
